LEGAL PROJECTS

In the defense and protection of the rights of women and children, WOCWI renders free counseling and pro bono services to women, survivors of Domestic violence, do school sensitization programme on identifying violence and abuse and addressing it. Proposes Bills to Legislative Arms and defend same, pursue Laws and policies in the best interest of women and children among others.

In 2009, WOCWI coordinated Children Parliamentarians to advocate for the establishment of Family Court where issues arising from Kwara State Child Rights Law, 2006 will be determined and it was established same year.

NOMINATION OF PROFESSIONALS FOR COMMONWEALTH FELLOWSHIP TRAINING IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

In 2010, through a contact made( with Elvira Wilson) at a United Nations Convention in the New York, USA, the Chairperson of WOCWI was nominated for a three month fellowship training in the UK. Having seen the benefits to career enhancement, she in turn has recommended some professionals for same training, fully sponsored by the British Council. Beneficiaries so far are 4 NBA members, 2 Magistrates of Kwara State Judiciary,4 Officers of Kwara State Ministry of Health, 1 Assistant Director of Kwara State Ministry of Education, 2 Media Professionals and 2 social workers (13 professionals from 2010 to date).

Outcome for Judiciary: established Family Court previously not functioning is now being manned by the two Magistrates Commonwealth Fellows.

TRAINING OF MAGISTRATES AND AREA COURT JUDGES ON FAMILY COURT AND CHILD JUSTICE ADMINISTRATION

Nigeria became a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1991, and that of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child in 2001. In 2003, the Child Rights Act (CRA) was signed into Law in Nigeria; the CRA was domesticated and signed into law in December, 2006 in Kwara State. By virtue of Section 1 of the CRA – “in every action concerning a child, whether undertaken by an individual public or private body, institution or service, court of law, or administrative or legislative authority, the best interest of the child shall be the primary consideration.” Under the Nigeria’s Child Rights Act (CRA) 2003, a child is protected against all harmful practices including child labour, child abuse, rape, sexual exploitation, early child marriage, child begging, and recruitment into armed forces, among others.
